CVC Word Practice: Spelling And Reading
Char’s Kindergarten teacher emailed this week letting her speech therapist and I know that she’s really struggling with phonemic awareness when it comes to sounding out and writing CVC words.
So… I found a mega list of short vowel CVC words on the internet (pasted it at the bottom of this post).
It took us about 30 minutes to work through these 10 words. DEEP BREATH. First sounding them out and then writing them, after I tell her a word. Lastly we would go back and she would sound the words out / read them. Both were challenging, but she enjoys the handwriting practice and stuck with it (mini quick breakdowns of exhaustion in between some).
Some times she just doesn’t have the “language acquisition” element. Meaning she doesn’t have the word in her “memory word bank,” so she will sound it out slowly correctly - then say a word she actually knows that is close, but not correct. Ex: for “wig,” she would say “wag.”
Other times she’d sound it out correctly, but then toss in extra end consonant sounds when she tried to speed it up. I know she can do this, but we just need to do this type of practice daily. (Note to self!)
In the evening we did a Hello Kitty easy reader with the long O sound last night - she started to get it by the end.
Will keep plugging away on my end. So thankful to have such a strong team supporting Charlotte.
